Mellie Grant is the fictional First Lady of the United States. She is cold as she is beautiful. She is presently in her element. Since she was a young girl reading and writing about the wives of presidents she endeavored to be one. Smart and determined to achieve her dream, she set her course and waited. As smart and educated as she was he would find her. Her president would come for her. She would go to the White House as its mistress, she would. Most little girls dream of loving husbands, children, and a beautiful home with a white picket fence. Not little Mellie. A husband and children, why in the world would she need those things? Little Mellie would stand outside in the cold Ashville, NC night and dream about a beautiful white house on a hill in Washington, DC.
Mellie Grant awakens everyday with cold air blowing on her back. It stings her, it burns her, and it invades her skin. She is in a cold marriage. Her husband has coldly told her to her face he is in love with another woman. She has given her children the cold shoulder. She is a cold and calculating woman. Is there any way she can avoid the cold? Most likely not. It is cold as hell in the nation’s capital right now. It is doubtful she can avoid the cold.
Why is it always so cold all around Mellie? Well she is of the cold-bloodied species. The environment has to be a certain temperature in order for her to survive. Think snakes, lizards, and iguanas, things that go bump in the night. Sometimes when her voice goes deep and scary a little cold mist seems to emerge from her mouth. Can you feel the chill come over the room? The woman has skills.
Her president did finally come. Actually his father came, Fitzgerald Thomas Grant II, with an offer she could not refuse. All she had to do was say yes. She could do it. After all, had she not been pretending her entire life? Mellie coldly walked into a Boston tavern and looked into the eyes of her future husband, Fitzgerald Thomas Grant III, and pretended it was a chance meeting. She pretended to share his interests and goals in life. She pretended to have an interest in HIM. Those of us that know Mellie are aware of her world of pretense. “Pretending is what is real,” she once told her husband. She believes there is no way to get through a marriage other than to pretend.
Early in her arranged marriage Mellie had a despicable crime perpetrated against her. The man that had orchestrated her marriage, the man that brought her onboard, her own father-in-law raped her. Talking about cold, that was cold. Everything was not coming up Mellie. Even those that find Mellie herself without redeeming qualities had the utmost sympathy for her. No one should be ever be raped. Mellie Grant became pregnant shortly after that criminal act. Exactly whose baby she carried in her womb for nine months, her rapist or her husband, she has not said. She may not even know. The cold air is running down her spine. Only if it becomes vital to the survival of Mellie as FLOTUS will the issue of her rape or the paternity of little Jerry come up. Girl you know you are cold!
With the cold air blowing on her back she walked into the office of her OB-GYN and demanded she induce the labor of her 36-week unborn baby. It was a cold and calculated risk. She put her unborn baby’s life on the line to rein in her husband. His heart belongs to another woman. He wants a divorce. He was about to go to his woman and make a declaration. The Presidency, Mellie, all of it be damned. Cyrus warned Mellie if she had a card to play she had better play it. Her card was to use the life of an innocent baby. Damn that was cold.
Speaking of this innocent baby, to his mother he is known as America’s baby. He is a patriotic duty she bore to save the presidency of her husband. She accuses her husband of barely being able to form an erection to make this precious baby. This we know is true because her husband ordinarily reserves his erections for the woman he loves and desires. Mellie knows she is not that woman, yet she would lie down and…..Brrrrrrrrr that is some cold doo-doo.
Mellie Grant is a woman scorned. We all have to give her that one. Her husband does not love her. He is without a doubt in love with another woman. She and her defenders claim she loves her husband. It is a far-fetched theory for someone as cold-bloodied as Ms. Mellie. When Mellie shows her true self she is evil personified. She speaks to her husband with venom dripping from her mouth. The disdain she feels for him because he does not love her is palpable. When the CRAZY overtakes her she looks at her husband with such coldness in her eyes.
Like the woman that loves her husband said to him, “You and your wife are standing in their doorway three feet apart letting the cold air in.” The cold air is always swirling around Mellie and Fitzgerald Grant. There is no warmth in the room. There is no love in the room. There never has been. To answer Mellie’s question, IT IS YOU GIRL, the room is stone cold.
