Where do you start in describing a love that had its genesis on the back roads of America? It was not subtle. You saw it coming. It was love at first sight. By the time Fitzgerald Thomas Grant III said, “And you are?” The arrow had pierced his heart. His life would never be the same. He tried to fight it. He knew what he was feeling was a game changer.
He asked Cyrus to fire this woman that he had hired to shape up the Grant campaign. He needed her gone if he were to be the man he wanted to be, a man unlike his father. He needed her gone if he were to take in a normal breath again. He needed her gone if he were to continue as he had been, going through the motions, existing in a loveless and dead marriage.
Cyrus would not bulge on his hiring of Olivia Carolyn Pope and gave Fitz an ultimatum, get Olivia back on the campaign or find another campaign manager. Fitz went after Olivia to bring her back into the fold. He could barely form words. His arrow pierced heart was thumping out of his chest. He could not take his eyes off of her. Drawn to her, his mouth just inches from hers, he wanted to taste her. He knew what he should have done, but he could not. Thus one of the most potent and sexy love affairs of modern fantasy TV began. But can it survive Shondaland?
There are millions of Scandal fans out there hoping it can. They are hoping that Fitz can have the life he wants. They want to see Olivia Pope with that radiant smile on her face that only her man can put there. But can they survive the roller coaster ride? Scandal pace is merciless. It chug-a-lugs you up the hill slowly and sends you flying down the incline at warp speed, story lines being hurled at you so unbelievable at times you draw in a breath and forget to let it out. You are startled, stunned, and sometimes speechless.
Fitzgerald Thomas Grant III and Olivia Carolyn Pope are the protagonists of this drama. They are why millions of Gladiators tune in to ABC at 10pm on Thursday nights. They anxious to see what awaits these star-crossed lovers, who have dared to love where they should not. He is married, he is the President, and he can’t or he shouldn’t. But he did. She is single, she is the campaign fixer, and she knew she shouldn’t. But she did. For two seasons they have entranced the Gladiator nation with their love affair. Theirs is a love so emotional, so raw, and so all consuming it sometimes takes you beyond fantasy. They break-up to make-up. And the make-up is usually so hot and passionate it leaves the viewer hot and bothered. It is some powerful stuff.
But in comes Season 3 with its turbulence. Olivia has left Fitz yet again because of some ridiculousness. He is chasing her down trying to get her to see they belong together. Mellie of all people has her almost reined back in with her “come back to us speech.” Livvie has brought out the “Grant” paraphernalia from the campaign days. She is remembering how things use to be and in comes Jake (the snake) and Huck with the BS story of “Fitz killed your moma.” What a crock! Did he do it on purpose? The man was following military orders. Olivia as brilliant as she is would have known that and walked right into her man’s arms after he said “I am sorry baby, you know I would never ever do anything to purposely hurt you. I love you. We will move past this. Let me hold you. Let me love you.” Instead Olivia is acting as if Fitz purposely killed her mother. It was foolishness on a high level. The roller coaster at Shondaland is traveling at warp speed. There is lots of craziness on board.
Jake freshly delivered to Olivia from the hole is at OPA “working.” He is claiming to love Olivia. The man jumped the woman after knowing her a hot minute. He pulled off her clothing almost as soon as she sat down her bags. Apparently foreplay is not Jake’s friend. He knew she was vulnerable and grieving over another man. Make no mistake Jake knew about Fitz and Olivia. Rowan sent him there to sleep with his daughter, to come between her and Fitz. Jake walks low to the ground.
Speaking of Rowan/Eli, do we give him his father of the year trophy now? The man is classless. He sent in an operative to sleep with his own daughter. He has not provided a home for his daughter since she was 12 years old. But he brags about sending her to boarding schools with the “children of kings.” He has not one photograph of his own daughter to show. He has not shown her any affection for years. He has for all intents and purposes abandoned a 12 year old girl to her own devices. We find out he has been imprisoning Olivia’s mother for over 20 years and that she is very much alive. This is the same mother that Olivia has abandoned Fitz over. This same mother is a certified terrorist and killer.
Rowan/Eli in the mean time is rimming Fitz during a so-called interrogation. Fitz gets to be the poster “boy” for all white folks and a racist past where all Black men were called “boys” on a daily basis. Fitz gets to be called “boy” for several minutes as Eli goes on a tirade about why Fitz is a boy and he is a man. Until Eli Pope can explain to me as to why Olivia Pope had no home since age 12 or a father that showed her unconditional love as she grew up, his classification of himself as a man will not stand. He is a poor excuse for a father and his manhood is tainted because of his treatment of his daughter. A man that sends an operative to sleep with his own flesh and blood and then has the nerve to say to anyone that they are a disappointing suitor for the same daughter’s hand is ludicrous. Fitz is many things including an adulterer and a murderer. But the one thing he most definitely IS, and that IS the “man” that loves Olivia Pope. Again the roller coaster at Shondaland rolls on barreling with craziness.
In all this craziness what is the one positive? Some good old fashioned loving took place in a house in Vermont. Fitzgerald Thomas Grant III built his woman a house. He called her home and she came for a while. The dream is viable. The dream is possible. All Olivia Carolyn Pope has to do is take the out- stretched hand of her man and go home to Vermont. There she can make babies and jam if she can survive the rides at Shondaland.
